7th Effectuation Conference: What to do next?

Naples, Italy
November 14th – 15th, 2022
Conference Invitation & Call for Papers

After two years of COVID hiatus and a series of events in Japan, the Effectuation Conference is back in 2022. Co-branded with ESCB and scheduled in tandem with the RENT Conference, the 2022 Effectuation Conference will take place in Naples, Italy. In the tradition of Effectuation Conferencea in past years, the format will offer plenary sessions as well as small group research and practice “pods” where your submissions can be developed into full fledged research articles and teaching materials. We will, of course, also enjoy the “effectual” dinner and debrief as usual.

Present your work

We invite participants with a research interest, a teaching interest and/or an interest in the practical application of effectuation to present their work. For those with a primary interest in research, we require participants to present a working paper. This work will be discussed in small groups in dedicated workshop sessions. For those with a primary interest in teaching and/or practice, we require participants to present a description or design of a practice they have used or are considering. We plan to have interactive sessions in which the various practices are shared between participants. New this year, we are also accepting case study submissions. Please see below for details on submission requirements.

Research orientation: please submit an academic paper, or extended abstract of at least seven pages, but maximum 30 pages. Papers can be fully developed, but we particularly encourage the submission of working papers that can benefit from our interactive workshop format.

Teaching or practice orientation: please submit a 3-7 page description or design of a practice you have used or are planning to use. That could be a teaching practice, a tool, or an intervention design. Please describe your experiences and list potential questions for discussion.

Case study: With the third edition of the bestselling textbook “Effectual Entrepreneurship” in the works, you could be part of the book and share your case study with the effectuation world. We are looking for diverse, real-world (not Hollywood!) examples of effectuation in practice (submit 3-7 pages). We also welcome case study ideas, and are happy to support authors with unique ideas in developing their work for inclusion in the textbook.

All types of papers should be sent to the organizers. Authors can send multiple types of submissions. Please indicate the track(s) you are submitting for (Practice/Teaching, Research, or Case Study) when you submit your work at

Registration fee < 200EUR (to cover costs of certain meals and venues); ECSB members enjoy a reduced rate. (Exact amount will be announced by mid June 2022).
